In the college basketball landscape we all know about Duke, North Carolina, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky. Some combination of those teams litter the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 every March. But there are always a couple of mid major teams that go on runs and play in the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
Arkansas State is playing in a bowl for an eighth straight season– the third longest streak in the Group of 5 and ranks 15th in the nation among all FBS programs. Overall, this is the 16th bowl in the program’s history and own a 7-7-1 record all-time.
Boston College comes in here at 7-5 on the season. The Eagles have taken out UMass, Holy Cross, Wake, Temple, Louisville, Miami FL and Virginia Tech but fallen to Purdue, NC State, Clemson, Florida State and Syracuse.
Utah State (9-2) takes a pre-Christmas trip to Houston, Texas in a matchup against a Top 25 opponent. The Aggies are tied 1-1 in the all-time series against Houston, with the teams last playing during the 1969-70 season.
The Sun Devils will come into this game ready to play and looking for the win. They wont be happy to just be in a bowl because as their coach Herm Edwards once famously said, “you play to win the game.”
