CSJ Classic: Maine’s Big Plays Oust Appalachian State (2002)

Editor’s note: This is the one in a series of three historical articles from the David Coulson archives that take readers back to the last time Maine traveled to Appalachian State for a first-round playoff game, in 2002. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium in an NCAA Division I Football Championship second-round contest. This article was originally published by several North Carolina newspapers and the web site I-AA.org on Nov. 30, 2002.
This would be the last time ASU lost at Kidd Brewer Stadium until 2007, when Georgia Southern stopped a 31-game, home winning streak. The 2003 freshman class at App State went through their entire college careers without suffering a home loss, ending their perfect slate with a semifinal playoff win over Youngstown State in 2006 that set up the Mountaineers for their second of three consecutive national championship, this one against Massachusetts, 28-17.
BOONE, N.C. — With a 10-point lead late in the third quarter and a defense putting the clamps on the Maine offense, it looked like Appalachian State was ready to book reservations for Georgia Southern this weekend.
But three big plays turned a trip to the quarterfinals into a 14-13 loss for the No. 5-ranked Mountaineers in the first round of the I-AA football playoffs.
“We just came up a play or two short,” ASU coach Jerry Moore said. “I don’t think (Maine) ever panicked.”
The game turned with 2:37 left in the third period when Maine freshman linebacker Joan Quezada intercepted a Joe Burchette pass at the ASU 33 with the Mountaineers facing a third and 19 from their own nine. It was the only turnover of the game.
Two plays later, the No. 7 Black Bears (11-2) scored when sophomore quarterback Jon Meczywor (7-of-15, 86 yards) lofted a play-action pass over the fingertips of cornerback Derrick Black and into the hands of receiver Ryan Waller for a 27-yard touchdown at the 1:32 mark.
Mark Wright’s 47-yard field goal with 14:57 left in the fourth period made it 13-7 for the Mountaineers, but Maine turned a disastrous offensive pass interference penalty into an opportunity to take the lead.
Facing a first and 25 at the ASU 41, tailback Marcus Williams (29 carries, 157 yards) smashed off-tackle and raced into the end zone with 9:41 to play.
ASU drove to the Maine 36 before being stopped with 4:34 remaining and decided to punt on fourth and eight from the 38, rather than try a 55-yard field goal, or gamble on a first down.
“It was really a hard decision to make,” said Moore. “We had a chance to down (the punt) at the one. We thought we could stop them down there and get good field position, but we weren’t able to slow them down at the last.”
Maine turned three third-down plays into first downs, the last on a face-mask penalty, to run out the clock.
“Our defense was battling to keep us in the game,” Maine coach Jack Cosgrove said. “We felt we had a chance if we could keep it low scoring.”
The Black Bears did just that in the first half, holding an erratic ASU attack to 71 yards and zero points.
The Mountaineers also blanked Maine’s offense in the first half, with Josh Jeffries blocking a 20-yard Mike Mellow field-goal attempt on the Bears’ most serious scoring threat.
Jerry Beard’s career-long 56-yard run on a pitch sweep opened the second half for ASU and set up Burchette for a one-yard scoring sneak on fourth down to make it 7-0.
With Beard (18 carries, 119 yards) and Sean Jackson (six carries, 69 yards) scurrying around the flanks for large chunks of yardage and Burchette (9-of-17, 73 yards) hitting fullback Joey Hoover for a 21-yard gain, the Mountaineers appeared poised for another touchdown on their next drive.
But Hoover dropped a pass in the end zone on third and two and ASU was forced to settle for Wright’s 19-yard field goal to make it 10-0.
That proved to be the high-water mark for the Mountaineers. “That was our problem all year, giving up the big plays,” said Jeffries, one of 21 seniors on the Mountaineers roster.
