Jacksonville State Remains No. 1 After Near Upset Of Auburn
Special to College Sports Journal
MISSOULA, MT. — Jacksonville State may have come up a play short of a dramatic upset at Auburn on Saturday, but on Monday, the Gamecocks earned enough respect to stay on top of the Any Given Saturday FCS Top-25 poll.
The Gamecocks received 47 of 80 first-place votes to retain their No. 1 position for the second week in a row in the poll widely considered to be the most accurate in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Auburn came into the game ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press Top-25 Football Bowl Subdivision poll. A win by Jacksonville State, which lost 27-20 in overtime after leading most of the way, would have rated as the second greatest of all-time for an FCS team against an FBS opponent.
Appalachian State defeated a No. 5-ranked Michigan squad in 2007, 34-32, in a season-opening game. FCS teams that have defeated ranked FBS opponents include James Madison over No. 15 Virginia Tech (2010), Eastern Washington over No. 25 Oregon State (2013), and North Dakota State over Kansas State (KSU was ranked in some preseason polls in 2013).
Other teams that received first-place votes included No. 2 Coastal Carolina (14), No. 3 North Dakota State (3), No. 4 Sam Houston State (6), No. 5 Illinois State (5), No. 6 South Dakota State (3), No. 9 Cal Poly (1) and No. 15 Portland State.
