Jacksonville State Wins Automatic Bid And Remains At No. 1 in AGS Poll

Special to College Sports Journal

MISSOULA, MT. — Jacksonville State was one of four more teams to grab automatic bids and the Gamecocks’ win helped them stay on top of the Any Given Saturday FCS Top-25 poll this week.

JSU (9-1 overall, 7-0 in league) gave its home fans something to celebrate with its 56-28 victory over Southeast Missouri State to wrap up the Ohio Valley Conference title.

The Gamecocks joined McNeese State (Southland) and Charleston Southern (Big South), who had clinched auto bids the previous week. Jacksonville State earned 81 of 83 first-place votes.

No. 2 North Dakota State (8-2, 6-1) was named on one first-place ballot after a big fourth-quarter comeback and controversial finish at Youngstown State in Missouri Valley Conference action. The Bison beat the then-No. 21 Penguins, 27-24.

McNeese State (9-0, 8-0) remained No. 3 in the poll after a bye week. The Cowboys, which received the other first-place vote, and Dayton (10-0, 7-0) are the only remaining undefeated teams in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Dayton clinched just the second-ever auto berth from the Pioneer Football League with a 28-21 win over Marist at home and were rewarded by earning the No. 25 spot in the poll.

In another battle of ranks teams, Chattanooga clinched the Southern Conference auto bid by holding off The Citadel, 31-23. The Mocs are ranked 10th this week, while the Bulldogs are No. 18.

Portland State (8-2, 5-2) and Coastal Carolina (9-1, 4-1) swapped places between seventh and ninth. The Vikings won a key Big Sky Conference battle with No. 13 Southern Utah in the final seconds, 24-23, to grab the seventh slot.

The Chantacleers beat Kennesaw State in Big South play at home, 45-13.

Charleston Southern (9-1, 6-0) jumped from 10th to eighth with its 31-24 triumph at home against Liberty in a Big South matchup.

South Dakota State, Illinois State and William & Mary all remained in the same spots in the top-10 at fourth, fifth and sixth after wins.

The fan-based and moderated AGS poll has been widely recognized as the most accurate in FCS since its debut as a fan-based voting service over a decade ago.
