College Sports Journal Sagarin Mid-Major Men’s Basketball Top 25 – Dec. 11
Below are the Top 25 Mid-Major rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Dec. 11th, 2022. Kent State stays at the #1 position this week following the Golden Flashes splitting its two games last week on the road–a loss at Gonzaga and a win at Cleveland State.
Iona moves up five spots from last week to the #2 position following the Gaels winning two games last week over two High Major Atlantic 10 foes in Saint Louis and St. Bonaventure. Yale stays at the #3 position this week despite the Bulldogs losing two road games at Butler and Kentucky.
The fourth slot this week is College of Charleston–moving down two spots from last week. The Cougars moved down despite winning its two games this past week over Presbyterian and DII North Greenville.
New Mexico State rounds out the Top 5 this week as the Aggies move up a spot from last week. NMSU actually played three games this past week in winning two of the three–wins over DII Simon Frasier and Duquesne and a loss to Santa Clara.
The 2022-23 season will culminate with the national championship from NRG Stadium in Houston on April 3rd. CSJ will complete a weekly Sagarin rankings of the Mid-Major teams throughout the regular season and do a final ranking after the national tournament is complete.
The Mid-Major conferences include America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American (MAC), Mid-Eastern (MEAC), Northeast (NEC), Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, and Western Athletic (WAC) conferences, as well as the two independent schools of Chicago State and Hartford. These conferences are typically just a one-bid league in the NCAA Tournament.
Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the Mid-Major side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.
