College Sports Journal Sagarin Mid-Major Men’s Basketball Top 25 – Jan. 17

Below are the Top 25 Mid-Major rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Jan. 17th, 2022.

Belmont is in the top position in this first poll CSJ has conducted this season. The Bruins have started the season at 14-4 with wins over the Missouri Valley’s Drake and Evansville, as well as the Atlantic 10’s Saint Louis. The Bruins, however, dropped their first Ohio Valley Conference game this past week to Murray State.

Speaking of Murray State, the Racers are #2 in the rankings in this first poll conducted this year. Outside of the win over Belmont, Murray State has wins over the Missouri Valley’s Illinois State, as well as the AAC’s Memphis. The Racers currently sit at 12-2 and are undefeated in the OVC.

New Mexico State sits in the #3 position in this first poll. The Aggies sit also with a 12-2 record and have wins over the Atlantic 10’s Davidson, as well as a Power Six win over Washington State. NMSU is currently one of three undefeated Western Athletic Conference squads.

Chattanooga lands at the #4 spot in this poll. The Mocs just lost to Western Carolina as their first loss in SoCon play this past week. However, Chattanooga has impressive wins over the A-10’s VCU and Confernce USA’s Middle Tennessee.

South Dakota State is in the #5 spot out of the Summit League. The Jackrabbits currently are undefeated in the SL. SDSU has prior impressive wins over the Missouri Valley’s Bradley and the A-10’s George Mason, as well as a Power Six win over Washington State.

The Mid-Major conferences include America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, and Western Athletic conferences.

Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the Mid-Major side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.

In the rankings, you will see the the Mid-Major rankings first and the overall Division I ranking to the right of the the Mid-Major ranking.
