College Sports Journal Sagarin Mid-Major Men’s Basketball Top 25 – Jan. 17

Below are the Top 25 Mid-Major rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Jan. 17th, 2021. Furman remains atop the standings after picking up two SoCon wins over The Citadel and East Tennessee State.

Toledo remains #2 spot this week despite the Rockets splitting two MAC games this week–a win at home over Eastern Michigan and a narrow one point loss on the road to Akron.

Wright State moves into the third position also despite splitting its two Horizon League games against Cleveland State.

Colgate from the Patriot League moves up to the #4 spot with impressive sweep of two games at home over Holy Cross in league play.

The Mid-Major conferences include America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, and Western Athletic conferences.

Due to COVID-19 reasons, the Ivy League has suspended its play for this season so no teams from that conference will be included in this poll. Other schools including the MEAC’s Bethune-Cookman and Maryland Eastern Shore, as well as the WAC’s Chicago State have also opted out of playing the rest of the 2020-21 season.

Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the Mid-Major side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.

In the rankings, you will see the the Mid-Major rankings first and the overall Division I ranking to the right of the the Mid-Major ranking.
