COLLEGE SPORTS JOURNAL SAGARIN FBS G5 TOP 25 – SEPT. 16
Here are the Top 25 FBS Group of Five (G5) rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Sept. 16th, 2023 following the Week 3 games. We will will have a final ranking after all bowl games and the College Football Playoff national championship game in January.
SMU stays in the top spot this week following the Mustangs easy win at home over FCS Prairie View. Boise State moves up a spot to the #2 position also following a loss at home win over another FCS school in North Dakota. The Broncos got their first win of the season following two defeats to Power Five schools in Washington and P5 newcomer UCF.
Tulane moves down a spot to the third spot this week. The Green Wave actually won their game this week at Southern Miss but had lost last week to Power Five Mississippi at home. Appalachian State moves up one spot to the #4 position this week following the Mountaineers win at home over in-state nonconference foe East Carolina. App State was an overtime away from a win at another in-state foe North Carolina two weeks ago.
Air Force rounds out the top 5 and is the lone undefeated team in the Top 5. The Falcons opened up Mountain Conference play this past week with a rather easy home victory over Utah State. The Falcons are currently one of just seven remaining undefeated G5 squads.
The remaining undefeated squads now all sit inside the Top 25. Fresno State sits at #7, Memphis at #8, Marshall at #10, James Madison at #13, Liberty at #17, and Georgia State at #23.
Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the G5 side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.

The numbers show the ranking in the Group of Five Top 25 as well as the overall Division I ranking.
The Top 10 and Top 30 are the overall Division I Sagarin rankings.
