COLLEGE SPORTS JOURNAL SAGARIN FBS G5 TOP 25 – SEPT. 9
Here are the Top 25 FBS Group of Five (G5) rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Sept. 9th, 2023 following the Week 2 games. We will will have a final ranking after all bowl games and the College Football Playoff national championship game in January.
SMU moves into the top position despite is lose at Oklahoma. The Mustangs had opened the season with a home win over Louisiana Tech. Tulane is in the #2 position also following a loss at home to Mississippi. The Green Wave had opened the season with an impressive home win over South Alabama.
Boise State had started the season as the #1 team in the rankings but now are sitting at the #3 spot following two straight losses to Power Five schools. The Broncos lost at Washington to begin the season and narrowly lost at home to new to the P5, UCF this past week. Toledo checks in at the fourth spot. The Rockets had a chance to upend the Big 10’s Illinois to begin the season on the road but gave up a late field goal to lose the game in the final minute. Toledo though rebounded this past week to destroy FCS Texas Southern.
Rounding out the top 5 is another team that lost in Week 2 but just narrowly over its Power Five foe. Appalachian State comes in at the #5 position after its double overtime loss at in-state North Carolina this past week. The Mountaineers had opened the season with a rather easy win over FCS Gardner-Webb
Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the G5 side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.

In the rankings, you will see the the G5 rankings first and the overall Division I ranking to the right of the the G5 ranking.
The numbers show the ranking in the Group of Five Top 25 as well as the overall Division I ranking.
The Top 10 and Top 30 are the overall Division I Sagarin rankings.
