College Sports Journal Sagarin Mid-Major Men’s Basketball Top 25 – Preseason 2022-23
Below are the Top 25 Mid-Major rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the preseason of the 2022-2023 season. Furman is the preseason pick for the Mid-Major rankings after losing in the Southern Conference championship game to Chattanooga last year but finished with a 22-win season. Two WAC schools in New Mexico State and Grand Canyon are second and third respectively. The fourth and fifth slots are two MAC teams in Toledo and Kent State. Only New Mexico State made last year’s NCAA Tournament from this year’s Top 5 preseason ranked schools.
The NCAA basketball schedule this season begins with many schools starting play on November 7th. The 2022-23 season will culminate with the national championship from NRG Stadium in Houston on April 3rd. CSJ will complete a weekly Sagarin rankings of the Mid-Major teams throughout the regular season and do a final ranking after the national tournament is complete.
The Mid-Major conferences include America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American (MAC), Mid-Eastern (MEAC), Northeast (NEC), Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, and Western Athletic (WAC) conferences, as well as the two independent schools of Chicago State and Hartford. These conferences are typically just a one-bid league in the NCAA Tournament.
Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the Mid-Major side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.
