Highlights: CSJ FBS Group of Five Top Five Games and Recap of Week 10
And then there was none. We came into Week 10 with two undefeated teams in Appalachian State and SMU and after Week 10 there are none left. Appalachian State lost at home to Georgia Southern Thursday night, while SMU lost at Memphis Saturday night.
This leads to a lot of uncertainty in the Group of Five for the top spot. There are a number of one loss teams now that are fighting for the top spot and a trip to a New Year’s Six bowl game. Both SMU and Appalachian State very well could still be in the mix but both likely would need to win out to have a chance now.
Below are the standings from each of the five G5 conferences and the independents.
American Athletic Conference
Conference USA
Mid-American Conference
Mountain West Conference
Sun Belt Conference
FBS Independents
Here is the full list of the one-loss G5 teams with the one-loss each has endured.
Appalachian State (7-1) | Loss 10/31 24-21 vs. Georgia Southern (home) |
Boise State (7-1) | Loss 10/20 28-25 vs. BYU (road) |
Cincinnati (7-1) | Loss 9/7 42-0 vs. Ohio State (road) |
Memphis (8-1) | Loss 10/12 30-28 vs. Temple (road) |
Navy (8-1) | Loss 9/26 35-23 vs. Memphis (road) |
SMU (8-1) | Loss 11/2 54-48 vs. Memphis (road) |
Louisiana Tech (7-1) | Loss 8/31 45-10 vs. Texas (road) |
San Diego State (7-1) | Loss 9/22 23-17 vs. Utah State (home) |
Based on the strength of schedule and who they lost to Memphis has to now be in the top spot for the New Year’s Six game. The Tigers have handed the lone loss to two of the other one-loss teams in Navy and SMU. And its loss is to a conference team early in the season by a narrow margin to Temple. Cincinnati would be my #2 pick as its only loss it to a likely Top 4 Football Playoff team in Ohio State. Right now, those two would meet in the final regular season game and the winner of that game probably gets the node if they both win the rest of their games this year.
