College Sports Journal Sagarin FBS G5 Top 25–Sept. 29
Here are the Top 25 G5 rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Sept. 29th, 2024 following the Week 5 games. We will will have a final ranking after all bowl games and the national championship game in January.
Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the G5 side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.

Boise State stays as the top team after the Broncos defeated Washington State rather easily at home this week. UNLV stays at the #2 spot after the Rebels opened Mountain West Conference play at home with an easy win over Fresno State and also remained undefeated.
Tulane moves up a spot to the #3 position this week after the Green Wave easily opened American Athletic Conference with a win over South Florida. James Madison moves up two spots and stays undefeated on the season after the Dukes easily defeated Ball State at home in non-conference play.
Memphis moves down two spots to the #5 position to round out the Top 5. The Tigers moved down despite winning at home over Middle Tennessee State in this week in a non-conference match-up.
As mentioned UNLV and James Madison are undefeated. The other G5 undefeated teams as of this week are Liberty–ranked #6, Army–ranked #9, and Navy–ranked #11.
The FBS is moving this year to a 12-team playoff with the top five conferences getting an automatic bid so that means at least one G5 team will be represented in the new playoff structure.

The numbers show the ranking in the Group of Five Top 25 as well as the overall Division I ranking.
