College Sports Journal Sagarin Mid-Major Men’s Basketball Top 25 – Jan. 29
Below are the Top 25 Mid-Major rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending Jan. 29, 2023. Liberty is at the #1 position this week following the Flames winning its two games this past week in Atlantic Sun play over Jacksonville and North Florida.
Kent State is at the #2 position following the Golden Flashes winning its two games last week in MAC play over Eastern Michigan and Ball State.
Oral Roberts is in the #3 position after the Golden Eagles defeated Denver and Omaha in Summit League play this past week.
The fourth slot this week is Furman after the Paladins won its two games in Southern Conference play over Samford and UNC Greensboro.
College of Charleston rounds out the Top 5 this week as the Cougars despite losing its lone game this past week only their second loss overall and first in Colonial Athletic Conference play to Hofstra.
The 2022-23 season will culminate with the national championship from NRG Stadium in Houston on April 3rd. CSJ will complete a weekly Sagarin rankings of the Mid-Major teams throughout the regular season and do a final ranking after the national tournament is complete.
The Mid-Major conferences include America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American (MAC), Mid-Eastern (MEAC), Northeast (NEC), Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, and Western Athletic (WAC) conferences, as well as the two independent schools of Chicago State and Hartford. These conferences are typically just a one-bid league in the NCAA Tournament.
Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the Mid-Major side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.
