Missouri Valley Football Conference Week 5 Review
Week 5 was a slow week in the MVFC with just two teams in action this week. However, there was one big game to finish out the MVFC-Big Sky Challenge. Northern Iowa traveled to Weber State in a battle of Top 10 ranked teams. Youngstown State was the other team in action this week in hosting the NEC’s Robert Morris.
UNI fell behind early to Weber State and tried to come from behind but was not quite enough. Weber State jump out to a 27-3 lead en route to a 29-17 Panther loss. UNI outgained the Wildcats 384 yardsto 285 in the game but two turnovers and a bad snap did the Panthers in. Freshman QB Will McElvain ran for a career-high 105 yards on nine attempts to lead all rushers. He was also 16-29 for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the losing cause.
Youngstown State blewout Robert Morris 45-10 by using its defense. The Penguins defense allowed just 212 total yards — 131 of which came in the first quarter — and shut down an RMU offense that started the game with some life. The defense recorded its seventh interception overall on the season (11th total turnover) and registered 2.5 sacks.
Those two teams will face each other in Cedar Falls next week to open the MVFC slate.
