2017 In A Sentence: The Golden Flashes finished just 2-10 (1-7 MAC)–the team’s fifth straight losing season and cost former head coach Paul Haynes his job, who had been in Kent for all of those five seasons.
Biggest Shoes to Fill: DT Jon Cunningham recorded 10 tackles for a loss with 1.5 sacks to go with 51 overall tackles and was named to the All-MAC second team. He was the plug in the middle for KSU and signed a free agent contract with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons this past spring.
Key Player: LB Jim Jones is coming into his senior season and will be looked to be leader on the Golden Flash defense. He is coming off an All-MAC performance and has 151 career tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks.
Fearless Prediction: With new coach Lewis, Kent State will try to improve on both sides of the ball but especially on the offense. The Golden Flashes averaged just over 12 point per game last year and Lewis will bring in the up tempo offense he employed as the OC at Syracuse. The team likely will be exciting to watch but may need this season to acclimate to the new coaching staff.
