College Sports Journal Sagarin FCS Top 25–Apr. 3

Below are the Top 25 rankings based on the Sagarin rankings for the week ending April 3rd. These rankings are amongst the now 88 schools participating in the spring schedule. Joining Illinois State, who opted out the prior week, to opt out of the season after starting their season are Albany, Chattanooga, and Cal Poly last week.

NOTE: the Ivy League and Mid-Eastern (MEAC) conferences are not participating in the 2021 spring schedule, although three teams in the MEAC are playing and have recently been announced to still receive an automatic bid to the Division I FCS Playoffs.

North Dakota State moves back into the top spot despite not playing a game the last two weeks. The Bison were scheduled to host South Dakota State last week but the game was postponed until April 17th due to COVID-19 concerns within the NDSU program. NDSU also lost the prior week’s game at South Dakota.

South Dakota State moves into the #2 spot this week and as mentioned were off last week due to its scheduled game with NDSU being postponed. SDSU also missed the prior week’s scheduled game against Illinois State after the Redbirds opted out of the season.

James Madison moves into the third spot also despite the Dukes not playing this past week due to COVID-19 reasons against Richmond. JMU’s scheduled regualar season finale against Elon scheduled for this upcoming week was also postponed. Its conference of the CAA has not announced if either game will be made up in the final possible regular season weekend of April 17.

Eastern Washington was the lone top 4 team to play this past weekend and the Eagles picked up a big win over UC Davis to put them into the #4 slot this week.

Weber State checks also into the the Top 5 following the Wildcat narrow win over Southern Utah.

CSJ will show weekly rankings from the Sagarin rankings throughout the season and will have a final ranking after the national championship game in May.

Sagarin rankings provide the only rankings that actually ranks all Division I schools but our rankings will show just the FCS side of things and have been used for several years with his own computer ranking system to distinguish strength of schedule and strength of team when comparing teams.

The numbers show the ranking in the FCS Top 25 as well as the overall Division I ranking.
