Covering All College Sports Since 2012
Wow, it was good to have a full week of football back. Week 0 did give us an appetizer last week but we got a full course dinner in Week 1. The big game in the Group of Five matched two Texas schools that feel they can win their respective conferences. Houston and UTSA met.
It was upset week in the American Athletic Conference this week with two of the predicted contenders going down. Both UCF and Memphis took losses but the other contender now looks like the top pick in Cincinnati to win the league. SMU won a see-saw contents over Memphis as the Mustangs hit a late field.
This week we got the news of the two previously called-off conferences of the Mountain West and Mid-American Conferences making a return to play this fall. The Mountain West will follow what last week the Big 10 completed with a return to play on Oct. 24th and each school is intended to play eight games.
Since 2016, in fact, no preseason divisional winner (predicted by the media poll by the conference) has finished atop of their division standings.
Five players including James Proche from SMU, Jonahtan Ward from Central Michigan, Dan Ellington from Georgia Southern, Jarell White from Cincinnati, and Maurice Alexander from FIU have been selected as the College Sports Journal All-Stars for the week ending Oct. 7th, 2019 from the NCAA Division I FBS Group of Five schools. The honorees are.
FIU recorded a school-record nine (9-4 overall, wins in 2018, building on the surprising success of Coach Butch Davis’ debut season leading the Panthers. There was some frustration, as the Panthers lost to rival FAU and Marshall to end the season, but FIU soon rebounded to defeat Toledo in the Bahamas Bowl.
FIU is back in the postseason for the second consecutive year under Butch Davis.
