College football bowl games are upon us as the 2022 postseason begin this past weekend. The action kicked off on Friday, Dec. 16 and continued its first weekend into Saturday, Dec. 17. In the first weekend of bowl action, there were a total of eight bowl games with seven of those involving Group of Five.
The bowl season after the first weekend looked much like it did in the 2020-21 season as we saw several games canceled or opponents displaced because of the COVID-19 outbreaks amongst the teams. In fact, five bowl games were altogether canceled this season including four that involved Group of Five squads. But the big story.
There were four bowl games in the second and final bowl week involving Group of Five teams. Late game action for the three games involving G5 versus Power Five schools all cost the G5 teams really in winning their contests. Cincinnati had a big chance to show that they were one of the best teams.

The first Independence Bowl was played in 1977 and saw Louisiana Tech defeat Louisville 24-14. Louisville returned the following season and dropped a 35-13 decision to East Carolina.
